2 busted smuggling contraband into Edgecombe County jail

TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) - The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office seems to be cracking down on the smuggling of contraband into jails.

The sheriff's office announced Thursday that two inmates were charged in separate instances of attempting to smuggle contraband into the detention center.

Andre Donnell Downey, 31, of Rocky Mount, was found Wednesday concealing 28.7 grams of marijuana and loose tobacco while he was being processed into the jail. He had been sentenced to 35 months in prison for probation violation resulting for convictions for cocaine sales, the release said.

Downey has a $40,000 bond for felony possession of a controlled substance on detention center premises.

Tiffany Michelle Cole, 40, of Whitakers, was busted Monday for attempting to smuggle pills and tobacco into the detention center. She had been sentenced to 24 months for larceny, forgery, and probation violations. 

Cole has a $50,000 bond.
