Tarboro water now OK after 5 schools closed due to 'major leak'

TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) - Tarboro officials said over the weekend that water in the town was safe after a "major leak" triggered a boil water advisory Friday.

The leaks in the water system closed five schools in the town Friday, according to Edgecombe County Public Schools.

The following schools were closed: Martin Millennium Academy, Pattillo Middle School, Princeville Elementary, Stocks Elementary and Tarboro High School.

According to Edgecombe County officials, the leak caused periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system in Tarboro.

"Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system," officials wrote on Facebook.

On Saturday night, Edgecombe County officials lifted the boil water advisory and said, "all waters samples are clean."
