Woman dies after being stabbed during fight near park, Fayetteville police say

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) - A woman died after she was stabbed during a fight Monday afternoon in Fayetteville, police said.

UPDATE: 19-year-old woman charged with stabbing, killing woman near Fayetteville park

Around 3:30 p.m., police responded College Lakes Park on Rosehill Road after receiving a report of a disturbance.

Police said two groups met up at the park and got into an argument

"It is not a random act. There were at least four people involved, including the victim, in this incident," said Lt. Gary Womble with the Fayetteville Police Department.

Womble said the argument turned physical and ended with a woman being stabbed.

She was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she died, police said.

Womble said they currently do not have anyone in custody, and the case is being investigated as a homicide.

King says she takes her granddaughter to College Lakes Park once a week. She says the park is frequently home to baseball games and birthday parties.

"The ladies usually, and some men, bring their children here in the afternoon after they get out of school. We usually play, usually until it gets dark," said Sharon King.

Other parents echoed King, saying the park was very popular with families, and that any suspicious activity usually happens after dark.

"I'm going to be more cautious now because my kids stay in the park until like 8, 9 p.m. They play, they play. They love that park," said Christian Sergant.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide investigation is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
