Firefighters rescue woman trapped on 2nd floor during Durham house fire

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) - Durham firefighters rescued a woman who was trapped on the second floor of a burning home on Regan Court early Monday.

The Durham Fire Department responded to a call around 6:40 a.m. to Regan Court where they saw fire pouring from a home, officials said.

Responding firefighters used a ladder to rescue a woman trapped in a rear bedroom on the second floor.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.

Neighbors say a husband, wife and daughter lived at the home on Regan Court.

“I’m just heartbroken,” said Jameca Dupree, who lives next door.

“We literally were standing in the driveway watching the house burn down it was just very traumatic,” she said.

The victim is recovering from smoke inhalation at Duke Regional.

Looking at the damage so close to home, Dupree says her husband and three children will revisit some drills.

“The emergency exit plan we have a proper or do we have the proper things in their rooms in order to break a window in case they need to escape from a window,” she said.

In the meantime, this community is helping a family that has to start over.

“I told the dad that whatever he needs that we have is back,” she said.

After Monday morning’s fire, the fire department is reminding people to go over an escape plan at your home with your family.
