Kroger to close all stores in Raleigh, Durham

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - Kroger announced it is closing all of its stores in the Triangle area, impacting 1,500 employees.

A total of 14 stores are expected to close by Aug. 14.

“After a thorough evaluation of the market for a significant time period, we have decided to close our stores in the highly competitive Raleigh-Durham market,” said Jerry Clontz, president of the Mid-Atlantic Division of Kroger. “While we have had some success, we have not been able to grow our business the way we would like in this market."

More than half of the affected employees are part-time. Clontz said the company will offer job fairs and job placement services to the employees.

Kroger said it will close or sell off the following locations:

  • 202 W. NC Hwy 54, Durham
  • 3457 Hillsborough Rd., Durham
  • 5116 N. Roxboro Rd., Durham
  • 1273 N.W. Maynard Rd., Cary
  • 8345 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh
  • 940 US Hwy 64, Apex
  • 1802 North Point Dr., Durham
  • 1371 E. Broad St., Fuquay-Varina
  • 6300 Creedmoor Rd., Ste. 150, Raleigh
  • 7905 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh
  • 2680 Timber Drive, Garner
  • 350 Six Forks Road, Raleigh
  • 3420 Southwest Durham Drive, Durham
  • 3825 S. Roxboro St., Ste. 101, Durham

Crunch Fitness has agreed to acquire the store at 6300 Creedmoor Rd. in Raleigh while Food Lion will acquire the store at 7905 Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh, the company said in a release.

"We are continuing discussions and exploring potential options for the remaining stores,” Clontz said.

The news stunned some long-time shoppers. Linda Kern has shopped at the Raleigh Kroger on Six Forks Road for 25 years.

"I know their faces," Kern said. "I just met my student in there. A student I just had this year. You just know them. It's friendly."

Raleigh resident Katherine Perry added: "It's just sad because I love the pharmacy here."

Harris Teeter has agreed to take over eight of those stores:

  • 202 W. NC Hwy 54, Durham
  • 3457 Hillsborough Rd., Durham
  • 5116 N. Roxboro Rd., Durham
  • 1273 N.W. Maynard Rd., Cary
  • 8345 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh
  • 940 US Hwy 64, Apex
  • 1802 North Point Dr., Durham
  • 1371 E. Broad St., Fuquay-Varina

In Jan. 2014, Kroger completed its $2.5 billion acquisition of Harris Teeter.

“Kroger owns Harris Teeter. And, because of that, some of the customers that go to Kroger are taking business away from Harris Teeter,” said Kelly Markson, a professor who teaches economics at Wake Tech Community College. “Unfortunately, consumers will be negatively impacted. When there’s less choice available for them, then that translates to higher prices.”

It’s not clear how long it will take for Harris Teeter to remodel the stores it will take over and re-open them.

The news followed the announcement this week by Lidl to scrap its plans to build a store on N.C. 55 in Cary.
