Man seriously injured after slamming car into Raleigh church, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - Raleigh police say a man was fleeing authorities when he crashed an Infiniti sedan into a church early Friday morning.

Police responded to Westminster Presbyterian Church in the 300 block of E. Whitaker Mill Road around 4:45 a.m. in reference to the single-vehicle crash.

According to the wreck report from Raleigh police, the driver "was fleeing a traffic stop at a high rate of speed ... (then went) off the road to the right."

The Infiniti then overturned and collided with the building, the report said.

Robert Kenneth Williams, of Satinwood Drive in Clayton, was initially trapped in the car and was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries, according to police.

The police wreck report indicated that investigators suspect "impairment" from alcohol or other drugs.

Police estimated damage to the church at about $20,000.
