Tarboro assisted-living resident strangled to death, police say

TARBORO, N.C. (WNCN) - A 75-year-old woman found unresponsive at a nursing home in April died as a result of strangulation, officials confirmed.

Paramedics responded April 5 to an emergency call from the Open Fields Assisting Living facility in Edgecombe County. Investigators pronounced Rebecca Eudy dead, and her preliminary autopsy classified the cause of death as “unnatural.”

Eudy's certificate of death reveals the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by manual strangulation. The report shows Eudy suffered traumatic neck injuries and asphyxia.

Edgecombe County investigators said Thursday that the case remains open. One of Eudy's daughters said the family continues to grieve, but detectives directed them not to discuss the case at this time as it's an ongoing investigation.

The administrator for Open Fields issued a statement soon after Eudy's death which said, "We take all issues seriously and are conducting an internal investigation as well as fully cooperating with the authorities."

Deputies were at the assisted care facility Thursday afternoon.

"In the interest of protecting our residents and staff, we hired off duty police officers around the clock," Camillae Nicholson said in a new written statement.

"We have been collaborating closely with our local professional police department. Our facility has been receiving continual support from these fine officers.  It is always our intention to provide a safe environment for our residents and guests. As this is still an open investigation we cannot comment any further."

In February 2018, the facility went through a state inspection in which they received three out of four stars.

Inspectors found a “Type A violation,” although records do not show what that violation was. The facility fixed the issue prior to the follow-up inspection.

The facility has not received any penalties in the last three years, records show.

The State Bureau of Investigation is also assisting with the case.
