4 crews pitch in to quell barn blaze in Rolesville

ROLESVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) - It took several fire departments to knock down a massive barn fire in Rolesville.

The fire started shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the barn behind a property on Quarry Road.

David Joseph Marks said he's lived on the property for 20 years.

"I went outside to feed the birds, and I saw the flames. I went round, pulled the water hose. The water hose wouldn't do it," said Marks

Marks said he called 911. Assistant Chief of the Rolesville Fire Department, Donnie Lawrence, said the entire barn was on fire by the times units arrived.

"The woods were on fire. The barn was totally engulfed in flames," Lawrence said.

Neighbors said they heard multiple explosions.

Marks said he uses the barn for storage. There were two cars, a motorcycle, and tools inside. He said everything is a total loss.

"I wish it didn't happen, but I'm glad it's over," Marks said.

Lawrence said it took crews from Rolesville, Zebulon, New Hope and Wendell 20 minutes to get the fire under control, and then about another hour to put out the hot spots.

Lawrence said on the hottest day of the year so far, keeping his crew hydrated was a big concern.

"They've been taking water breaks. We've been going through a lot of water," he said.

No one was hurt, Lawrence said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
