Local volunteers headed to Guatemala in wake of deadly volcano eruption

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - Friday, local volunteers will head to Guatemala for disaster relief efforts following Sunday's deadly volcano.

The Guatemalan Embassy in Raleigh teamed up with the Food Bank and several others to host a "Day for Guatemala" on Saturday at 1924 Capital Blvd.

It was previously scheduled as a celebration, filled with food and dance, but it will now focus on aid for the nation.

Organizers expect 2,000 Guatemalans to attend.

"The Association of Guatemalans in North Carolina are also coordinating all the volunteer efforts to make sure the items that are donated get to Guatemala," said Andrew Herrera, the executive director for Curamericas Global. 

In the meantime, the consulate and several local organizations are reaching out to locals whose loved ones may be in need.
