Man charged with involuntary manslaughter in Smithfield infant death

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) - A man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of an infant in Smithfield earlier this month, police said.

Guillermo Tinajero-Resendiz received a $150,000 secured bond after being charged with involuntary manslaughter and negligent child abuse causing serious bodily injury, according to Smithfield police.

When police were called to 2003 S. Bright Leaf Blvd. at about 11:20 p.m. Sunday, they found an infant unresponsive and not breathing, according to a statement from the Smithfield Police Department.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital and died.

Officials made the decision to charge Tinajero-Resendiz after reviewing the results of an autopsy, police said.

Gabriela Vargas, who said she is Tinajero-Resendiz's step-niece, identified the deceased child as Vivian Resendiz-NeSmith, an 8-month old.
