WSPA and The Associated Press -

TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, NC (WSPA/AP) -- A pair of men died when one fell and the other tried to reach his friend and also fell on the Lake Toxaway property.

Chief Carmon West at Lake Toxaway Fire Department, says two Georgia men were on the waterfall and one fell 150 ft. to his death after hitting the rocks on Tuesday.

The other male fell 50 feet and was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he later died.

The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office identified the victims as 22-year-old Davis Ilan Zinsenheim and 23-year-old Joseph Harper Hopkins both from Marietta, GA.

Officials say Hopkins fell about a quarter way down the falls to a ledge and Zinsenheim fell all the way down when he tried to reach Hopkins.

There were 35 rescuers who responded to the accident in Transylvania County, the chief says.

A 100 foot ladder truck was used to lay against one of the rocks to rescue one of the males.

Rescuers rappelled down the rock and used a basket to extract the surviving victim out around 9:20 PM.

Hopkins, who fell to the ledge, was flown to the Greenville, South Carolina, Memorial Hospital and was in critical condition before he died.
