Mother and 8-year-old son hit by car in Johnston Co.; mother dies, son hospitalized

BENSON, N.C. (WNCN) - A Benson woman and her 8-year-old son were struck by a car Thursday morning as they stood in a street in a Johnston County trailer park, killing the woman and hospitalizing the child, police said.

About 8:24 a.m., Ma Del Rosario Perez-Valdovinos, 49, of Benson drove a blue Kia into Maria Aguilar Suarez, 34, of Benson and her 8-year-old son, Juan Almanza, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two were trapped beneath the car for a time, police said.

They were taken to WakeMed for treatment of serious injuries. Suarez later died, the Highway Patrol said.

Friends of Suarez said they can't believe what happened.

"It's my neighbor it's very sad I knew their kids. they always go to my house," said Veronica Fraire.

Charges are pending, police said.
