Calls to 911 reported a man with a gun on campus.

The Sheriff's Information Bureau says the report was received at 7:05 a.m. Friday and deputies were sent to Highland High School.

A woman told CBS Los Angeles that her son told her he was in class at the school and heard at least one gunshot.

The Sheriff's Information Bureau said one person was shot in an arm at the school and is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.  A firearm was also recovered from the scene, officials said.

A message posted to Highland High School principal's Twitter account urged everyone to stay clear of campus.

Sheriff's deputies in Palmdale also responded to reports of an active shooter at Manzanita Elementary School, which is located about eight miles from Highland High.  Deputies later said they searched the elementary school and that no evidence of a crime was found.

Palmdale is north of Los Angeles in the high desert Antelope Valley.
