Former Oregon tennis coach sentenced for child sex crimes

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) - The former Portland, Oregon tennis coach who was convicted of being in possession of child pornography was sentenced to two years in prison Monday morning.

Thomas Zachary Rouse, 44, pleaded guilty on April 26 to two counts each of second-degree encouraging child sexual abuse and attempted encouraging child sexual abuse. Each count represents a separate, minor female victim, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.

"Not only were the defendant's actions illegal, the conversations he had with these children were among the most disturbing and reprehensible that we saw as law enforcement see," Multnomah County Deputy Distract Attorney Melissa Marrero said.

The investigation into Rouse began in September 2015 when the Portland Police Bureau received a copy of a report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The report was submitted by an online adult dating website. The company reported that a user, later identified as Rouse, was engaging in a chat with another user and exchanged child pornography.

Rouse was employed by the City of Portland as the Parks and Recreation tennis director. However, his crimes were not connected to his job.

As part of Rouse's sentence, he'll be on five years of formal probation with conditions of supervision specifically tailored to sex offenders. After his release from prison, he will also be under three years of post-prison supervision.

Rouse will have to register as a sex offender for life and will be required to attend sex offender treatment.
