Witness reports woman dumping 3 dogs in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) - A woman who was seen dumping three dogs on the street in southeast Austin, Texas had called 311 a few hours earlier to ask for Animal Control to come pick them up, according to an arrest affidavit.

On Sunday, April 1, a witness called 911 when she saw a woman open her rear passenger door and "forced three dogs out of the vehicle" and onto the corner of Richardson Lane and Felix Avenue. The witness told police she was able to get the driver's license plate number.

When officers arrived a few minutes later, they found the three dogs and took them to the Austin Animal Center. The dogs varied in age from 6-months-old to 2 years old.

A license plate check led police to Dawnyale Chandler, 35, who lived approximately five minutes away from where the dogs were abandoned. According to the affidavit, Chandler first denied knowing anything about the dogs, but eventually admitted the dogs were in her possession. She repeatedly told police she could not care for them anymore.

According to the affidavit, about two hours before the dogs were found, Chandler called 311 to ask them to come get the dogs "because she does not want to be charged with animal cruelty for not caring for the dogs." The city call taker advised her to take the dogs to the shelter herself since the city's Animal Control will not come out to pick up owned dogs.

Records show Chandler has an extensive criminal background including two convictions for cruelty to non-livestock animals. Chandler is currently facing three new cruelty to non-livestock animal charges.
