Nearly 10 foot long alligator caught at Outer Banks

KITTY HAWK, N.C. (WAVY) - A sizable alligator was seen in a canal Monday morning in Kitty Hawk and was later captured.

Kitty Hawk police said there were reports of an alligator between Pineway Drive and Ivy Lane, on the sound side.

Officers reported finding an alligator that was between 10 and 15 feet long.  The alligator ended up being 9.5 feet long, according to Coastal N.C. Alligator Research.

According to the Smithsonian's National Zoo, the average female American alligators is about 8 feet in length, while males can be a little over 11 feet. 

Police cautioned residents to keep an eye on children and pets when they're out in yards. 

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, police said that there had been no further sightings of the gator, but later said two team members from Coastal N.C. Alligator Research captured the gator.

The team later released the alligator in the same area.
