Gunman sought after shooting near NC elementary school's basketball courts

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) - The Kinston Police Department is trying to locate a man wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred at Southeast Elementary School Tuesday.

Police said that Allen D. Lewis has several warrants issued for him, including attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, discharging a firearm on educational property and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a shots fired call at Southeast Elementary School in Kinston.  

Police were also dispatched to 807 Chestnut Street and said they found Rico D. Garner in a vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his lower body.  

The shooting happened near the school's basketball courts, police said.

Garner was transported to the Vidant Medical Center.

The incident is still under investigation.
