Raleigh police ID body found near Lake Johnson bridge

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - Raleigh police are investigating after a man's body was found in Lake Johnson near the footbridge across the lake.

Authorities now confirm the man has been identified as 31 year-old Demario Antonio Liles, who has been missing since New Year's Day and last believed to be in the area of Lake Johnson early that morning.

Raleigh police said a man's body was recovered from the lake around 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Raleigh police said they believe the body, which had been in the lake for some time, could be a missing person.

Police said they believe the body is that of the man who was last seen on New Year's Eve.

Raleigh police found a wrecked car on New Year's Day around 2:20 a.m. at the same address where the body was found.

According to the wreck report,  the vehicle, a Dodge passenger car, was traveling south on Avent Ferry Road on the bridge over Lake Johnson and failed to "negotiate" the curve and ended up crossing the center line and hitting the guardrail and bouncing.

The report states that the occupant(s) left the scene.

The registered owner was contacted and refused to provide information about who was operating the vehicle and there was no evidence of injuries at the scene, the police report said.

Several agencies, including the Raleigh Police Department, the Wake County Sheriff's Office, the Apex Fire Dive Team and the North Carolina K9 Emergency Response Team were involved in the recovery of the body.
