Shirt 'melted' off victim after woman threw acid on him, SC police say

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (WNCN) - A South Carolina woman is in jail after police said she poured acid on a man during an argument Thursday afternoon.

The incident was reported around 1:30 p.m. at a home on North Cook Street in Bennettsville, about two miles from the North Carolina border.

As an officer was pulling up, he was flagged down by a woman outside her home. A man standing in the woman's yard was being washed off by a water hose, the report said.

The man had obvious burns to his face and arm, the officer noted. The victim told police that a woman threw acid on him. Paramedics were called and the man was taken to a burn center for treatment.

The officer walked across the street to the home where the argument happened and spoke with the suspect, Denise Nicole Stanback, 34, of Bennettsville, police said.

Stanback told police that she and the victim were in a verbal argument in the front yard. She told the victim to leave and he refused.

Moments later, the man attempted to leave, according to the report, and Stanback "doused him with drain cleaner."

WPDE reported that the man told police his shirt "melted off of his body" after he was hit by the acid.

Stanback gave the bottle of "Hot Power Drain Cleaner" to officers and was taken to the Dillon Hospital for treatment to minor burns on her arms.

Comstar, which manufactures the cleaner, says on their website the product "is the most powerful liquid drain cleaner on the market."

Stanback is charged with assault first degree and is currently being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center.
