Waterline replacement to close section of Raleigh's Glenwood Avenue

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - A section of Glenwood Avenue will be closed the weekend of May 5 to 7 due to waterline replacement, the City of Raleigh said.

Beginning at 8 p.m., crews closed Glenwood Avenue between White Oak Road and St. Mary's Street.

The City is replacing waterlines connected to The Circle, a street home to about 50 residences.

The city is expecting the work to wrap up this weekend and the roadway is expected to re-open the roads by 5 a.m. Monday morning. Parts of Glenwood and the side streets in the construction area will be accessible to local residents, but other drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible. Frank Ballard owns Hayes Barton Café and Dessertery near where the roads closed. He says he has to call everyone with a reservation to give them directions and he's worried it'll hurt crowds Saturday.

"It may hurt walk ins, people who are trying to get here, maybe first time people who don't know the area get confused and go downtown or somewhere," said Ballard. "So, we'll lose some folks tomorrow night. If my reservations come in I'll be okay. I got four reservations, but you want those walk-ins you want those people off the street who might not know the way to get here."

The city says customers in the area shouldn't experience any interruptions to their water service.

The following detour will be in place:

  • Motorists traveling southbound on Glenwood Avenue will turn right onto St. Mary's Street, left onto Wade Avenue, and right on to the exit ramp for Glenwood Avenue;
  • Motorists traveling northbound on Glenwood Avenue near Wade Avenue will turn left to exit to westbound Wade Avenue, turn right on St. Mary's Street and left back onto Glenwood Avenue;
  • Motorists traveling northbound on Glenwood Avenue between Wade Avenue and White Oak Road will turn right on White Oak Road, left on Anderson Drive and right back onto Glenwood Avenue;
  • Motorists traveling along Wade Avenue should turn to travel northbound along St. Mary's Street and left back onto Glenwood Avenue;
