Meteorologist Dave Downey joined the CBS 17 Storm Team in August 2023. You’ll see him on weekend mornings with forecasts to plan your football afternoons and during the week in the Weather Beast covering the latest weather stories in the Triangle and across the country.
Dave is an avid golfer and is thrilled to be in the state known to be the Home of American Golf. He can’t wait for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst next year and to check out as many incredible courses as he can between now and then!
Graduating from the University of Miami, he was around a few close calls for landfalls in South Florida, including Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019. He received degrees in Meteorology and Broadcast Journalism in his four years at “The U”.
He got his weather spark in 2012, when a line of severe thunderstorms rolled through his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, knocking out power for over a week. Wind gusts were recorded as high as 94 miles per hour!
After spending the last two years in Des Moines, Iowa covering the wild weather of the Midwest, he’s thrilled to be back closer to the beach and mountains. While he was in Des Moines, he won an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for “Iowa’s Forces of Nature,” a half-hour severe weather special.
When Dave isn’t watching the skies or his golf ball (hopefully) falling into the hole, you can find him trying out all the illustrious cuisine that the Triangle has to offer, firing up the grill at home, or at the gym.
Feel free to say hi to Dave while out and about!
