Joedy McCreary

Joedy McCreary joined the CBS 17 news team in December 2019 as a digital data reporter.

McCreary jumped across town to CBS 17 after spending 13 years covering sports in the Triangle and across the state for the Associated Press, with a focus mostly on Duke, Wake Forest, the Carolina Hurricanes and big-picture issues facing the Atlantic Coast Conference.

He covered Duke’s national championship in 2010, a pair of runs by the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference final, a few expansions by the ACC and more NCAA Tournament games than he can count.

He also wrote extensively about sports business in the ACC and was part of the team that covered NCAA investigations and issues at the three big local schools.

In all, he spent more than 17 years as an AP writer in Raleigh; Jackson, Mississippi; and Charleston, West Virginia. He’s also written for newspapers in Pittsburgh and across his home state of West Virginia.

McCreary graduated from West Virginia University and earned his master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. He lives in Wake Forest with his family and spends his free time either coaching youth sports or playing competitive baseball in a league for men over 30.
