Lance Blocker is a meteorologist on the CBS 17 Storm Team. You can see him on the morning shows Wednesday through Sunday.
Now let’s get to the most likely reason you are reading his biography… yes, it’s true that Lance is related to the iconic Dan Blocker from Bonanza. Though he never met him, he says he has enjoyed watching his reruns!
Growing up, Lance had a love for both weather and sports. He played baseball and football in high school, then spent years umpiring baseball games and even became certified to umpire minor league baseball. When the career path to the MLB didn’t work out, he adapted and started working for a local business in Atlanta, selling security systems door-to-door to make ends meet. Within a year, he worked his way up to become the National VP of Sales, overseeing three successful sales and acquisition teams.
However, Lance’s true passion for weather and his desire to make a positive impact in his community led him back to school. He returned to the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in Atmospheric Sciences. Despite being just two classes away from finishing a previous degree, he chose to start from scratch to follow his true passion: meteorology.
Inspired by the influential meteorologist James Spann, Lance decided to transition his career to broadcast television after attending one of Spann’s talks about serving communities during severe weather events. He seized an opportunity to intern with Spann’s ABC 33/40 team in Birmingham, where he further developed his skills.
Lance began his professional journey with Nexstar in Lubbock, Texas, where he provided weekend weather updates and spent countless hours storm chasing during the week. Seeking to broaden his severe weather experience, he moved to Columbus, Mississippi, situated in the heart of tornado alley. Lance served as the weekday evening meteorologist on WCBI’s 5, 6, 9, and 10 pm shows.
Lance joined the CBS 17 team in June of 2022, and has loved being a resident of Raleigh. Outside of work, Lance enjoys exploring the Triangle area, whether it’s running along the beautiful trails or hanging out at Falls Lake. He is also a passionate advocate for mental health and strongly supports addiction recovery services.
