Triangle community answers the call for donations to help local hospitals fight COVID-19

Coronavirus

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The community is already answering the call to help area hospitals collect much needed medical supplies to fight COVID-19.

Hospital leaders at both WakeMed and UNC Health put out a plea for the public to donate on Sunday. Not even 24 hours later and the support started to roll in at donation sites across the Triangle.

At UNC Rex on Lake Boone Trail donations started to come in at 9:15 Monday morning and continued throughout the day.

“This is a time where everyone should rise to the occasion our healthcare providers are getting ready to fight a storm,” said Joe Matthews with N.C. State University.

Matthews is with Materials and Engineering Science Department with the university and dropped off two pallets full of medical supplies.

“They’re risking their health and the health of their families to serve the public and to do that a lot of times without the proper PPE, Matthews continued.

From neighbors who work at the elementary and high schools down the street to big universities like N.C. State, everyone is giving what they can.

That’s what brought out hair Salon owner Whitney Baumach. She dropped off two bags full of gloves.

“As a hairstylist, we aren’t working right now. So, I wanted to put them to good work. Put it to good use,” said Baumach.

And they’ll use the supplies to provide care at hospitals like UNC as they brace for an influx of coronavirus patients.

“We need everybody to step up and look to see what they can do to help us,” said Kerry Heckle with UNC Health as she described the hospital’s needs.

“If we don’t have the supplies that we need here in the coming weeks we are going to experience a difficult time,” she continued.

UNC Health and WakeMed said they could use the following items for donations:

Most Urgent Needs:
N95 masks
Surgical masks
Surgical masks with a shield
Nasal swabs for medical use

Other needed supplies:
