LOS ANGELES (WNCN) – Peter Mayhew, known for his role as Chewbacca in the Star Wars saga, died Tuesday at the age of 74, his family announced.

“He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca, and it showed in every frame of the films, from his knock-kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth,” his family said in a statement. “But to him, the Star Wars family meant so much more than a role in a film.”

He is survived by his wife Angie and his three children.

The English-born actor stood 7 feet 2 inches tall and shared the role of Chewie in 2015’s “The Force Awakens” with Joonas Suotamo.

He was recently seen taking photos and signing autographs for fans at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago in mid-April.

He became an American citizen in 2005.

He died April 30 in Boyd, Texas.

In 2016, Carrie Fisher and Kenny Baker died. Fisher was known for her role as Princess Leia while Baker climbed in the can to play the droid that saved the day – R2D2.
