SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A Pennsylvania woman was killed, a Massachusetts man was injured and an East Tennessee man killed himself in what is believed to be a random shooting at the sprawling Tanger outlet mall Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting was reported around 3:49 p.m. outside the Coach store at Tanger Outlets.
The gunman, 21-year-old Leon Steven Jones of Newport/Sevierville, Tenn., shot two people with a semi-automatic handgun and then shot himself, said Bob Stahlke of the Sevierville Police Department.
Jones and 24-year-old Olivia Katelyn Cunningham of York, Pa., died. A 75-year-old man, John Marr of Templeton, Mass., was taken to UT Medical Center for treatment.
None of the three people involved knew each other, according to Stahlke, and it is believed to be a “random shooting.”
Tanger Outlets said in a Facebook post the stores would close at 6 p.m. to allow investigators to work.
“We are grateful to the Sevierville Police for their quick response to the sad and tragic situation that occurred on our property on Tuesday. We closed our stores at 6 p.m. tonight to allow the investigators to do their work. We plan to reopen tomorrow at normal time,” management said.
