GREENSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — An 11-year-old girl died in a crash on I-40 in North Carolina early Sunday, officials say.
The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. along Interstate 40 east near Sandy Ridge Road, according to a statement from Greensboro Police.
The wreck involved a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan that was heading east on I-40 and a 2017 Freightliner tractor trailer that was headed in the same direction.
The two vehicles collided and the Dodge Grand Caravan ran off the roadway to the right and rolled over numerous times, police said.
“An 11-year-old female passenger was ejected from the Dodge Grand Caravan and died as a result of her injuries sustained in the crash,” police said.
Carlton Bannerman, 34, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico was driving the Dodge, according to police.
Officials are investigating the crash, but said that impairment was not a factor.
This is the 24th deadly motor vehicle crash in 2016 in Greensboro.
