RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. (WFMY) — A 9-year-old boy was killed and three siblings were hurt in a crash on the way to school in Randolph County Thursday morning.
The single-car crash happened around 8:20 a.m. on Lassiter Mill Road near Bright Star Road in Asheboro. One of the four, Casey Noel Peterkin, had life-threatening injuries and died at the hospital.
The four inside the car were:
- Ihonesty Chandrae Ellyce Moore, 11
- Keysiya Antoinette Estella Peterkin, 7
- Casey Noel Peterkin Jr., 9
- Imani Za’Nae White Lewis, 18
Lewis was driving a 2006 Lexus and tried to remove a book bag from the front passenger seat when she went off the road to the right. She hit a ditch, overcorrected and collided with a tree on the car’s passenger side, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Keysiya Peterkin, Lewis and Moore had minor injuries. Casey Noel Peterkin Jr. was the back right seat passenger. Charges for Lewis are pending. None of the children were wearing seatbelts. No one was ejected.
Randolph County Emergency Services said someone tried to take them to the hospital before EMS arrived. EMS later met up with them near the intersection of New Hope Road and High Pine Church Road. They all were taken to Randolph Health.
