OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) – Oak Island Police Chief WL Ingram confirmed a body was found after crews responded to a call about a structure fire on the island.

At least two different fire departments were working to put out a fire on Northeast 54th Avenue Wednesday night.

Lt. Frankie Cooke with Oak Island Police Department says they were dispatched to the fire at 5:30 p.m. and were able to get the fire under control in just 15 minutes. When they got to the scene, the shed was fully engulfed in flames, half the house was on fire and a vehicle was burning as well.

Officials with Southport Fire Department confirmed they helped Oak Island Fire Department extinguish flames at the home. Initial reports indicate the fire began in the shed and spread to the house.

The deceased, who has not yet been identified, was the only person on the property at the time of the fire.

There’s no official word yet on what caused the fire.
