Central Prison inmate dies of apparent suicide

RALEIGH – Inmate Steven Haas was found unresponsive in his Central Prison cell just before midnight, after an apparent suicide.  He was declared dead at Central Prison’s medical center a short time later.

The State Capitol Police Department is investigating the death.

Haas, 39, had recently completed a 7 to 10-year sentence for convictions in Iredell County for second-degree sexual assault and indecent liberties with a child.  He was released from prison onto post-release supervision in April 2016, but returned to prison on May 2, 2016, after a violation of post-release supervision.
