The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving a deputy Sunday night following an armed robbery and chase in Garland.

The sheriff’s office said there was a report of an armed robbery at a Han-Dee Hugo’s convenience store on N. Ingold Avenue in Garland Sunday night around 11:30.

Assistant County Manager Susan Holder said a preliminary investigation revealed that a suspect fired shots inside the store and fled in a white sedan.

A “be on the lookout” went out on the vehicle. A deputy located the vehicle on NC 411 between Garland and Roseboro and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Jason Lee Evans, led the deputy in a high-speed chase, Holder said.

The chase ended about 20 miles from the store on Reeda Road near Salemburg. Holder said that’s when Evans got out of the vehicle. Holder said Evans had a firearm and the deputy fired his weapon at the suspect.

Holder said Evans was killed in the shooting. The investigation has been handed over to the SBI.
