RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The world famous Weeki-Wachee Mermaids of Florida are making a visit to North Carolina — appearing next month at the North Carolina Aquarium.
Ther mermaids, which include a North Carolina native, will be swimming along with sharks, rays and schooling fish at the aquarium in Fort Fisher, according to a news release from aquarium officials.
The mermaids will also be swimming with a large sea turtle named Shelldon.
Lydia Byrd, originally of Burnsville, North Carolina, is one of the mermaids who will appear at Fort Fisher, according to the news release.
The mermaids are set to appear March 1-3 and 8-10.
There will also be special events with the mermaids at the aquarium. Those include a mermaid paint night and a mermaid meet-and-greet.
A special Under the Sea AquaCamp is planned for both Saturdays with the mermaids for children 5 to 12.
The aquarium has hosted the Weeki Wachee Mermaids annually since 2017. Last year’s event included a mermaid originally from Raleigh.
The Weeki Wachee Mermaids are part of a 70-year tradition celebrating the underwater world at one of Florida’s oldest and most unique family attractions, the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.
