DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Authorities say a death investigation is now a homicide after a man’s body was found outside a hotel in the 5000 block of N.C. Highway 55 Sunday morning.
Officers responded to a report of a deceased person outside the hotel and discovered the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
One man living at the hotel says the discovery was disturbing.
“I pushed my drapes open and right in front of room 143 there was a corpse,” said Allan Krall.
Police haven’t released any information on a possible suspect or details on what happened leading up to the shooting.
However, people who live nearby aren’t shocked.
“I mean in this area it’s not that surprising. The rate of shootings and crime in Durham is skyrocketing and it doesn’t really seem like much is being done, so I don’t see it getting better anytime soon,” said Catherine McGuire, a Durham resident
Both residents say they hope the crime goes down so more people don’t get hurt.
“My neighborhood alone there’s just an ongoing joke that like ‘you don’t get to go to bed at the end of the night until you get your news alert that something’s happened,’ because that’s just how it is around here. So I think seeing the police chief and sheriff and others in the area talking about it will at least be the first step,” said McGuire.
Authorities said Monday morning the victim has been identified as Samuel Hughes, 31, of Raleigh.
