A man is facing 31 counts of manufacturing weapons of mass destruction after a call in Person County earlier this week revealed dozens of homemade pipe bombs, officials said.
The incident was reported as a tip on Monday around 7:15 p.m. about a suspicious item in woods near the 900 block of Lucy Garrett Road, Person County deputies said in a news release.
Deputies responded and found the item and then called the Durham Bomb Squad.
“During the investigation, approximately 31 devices were located,” the news release said.
“They were not armed where they were ready to fire but they could have been armed very quickly,” Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones said.
Jones said there is no evidence that person of interest had any malicious intent with the devices, and characterized the man as a “preparing for doomsday type of person.”
Randall Allan Lee, 47, was arrested in Hamlet by the Hamlet Police Department on Friday around 1:50 p.m.
