A Duke University student admitted to hanging a noose in a tree and has subsequently been removed from campus, the university said Thursday.
A student found a noose hanging in a tree near the Bryan Center on Wednesday. The university said it had identified the student who place the noose in the tree and removed that person from campus.
“The student will be subject to Duke’s student conduct process,” the university said. “The university continues to review the circumstances of the incident to determine if additional individuals were involved.”
The student’s name is being withheld, the university said, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
The university and student leaders held a forum Wednesday on the steps of Duke Chapel to discuss the incident and other allegations of racism. Recently, another student reported being taunted with the n-word.
