Durham City Council approves minimum wage increase

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Starting July 1, 2018, all city workers in Durham will be making at least $15 an hour.

During a budget meeting Thursday, the Durham City Council unanimously approved the plan which will gradually increase the minimum wage, which currently stands at $12.53.

The plan calls for a 6 percent increase every July until pay reaches $15 an hour.

“I’m so excited. I think everyone on council really wants to support our employees,” said Jillian Johnson, Durham City Council member. “We recognize that the city is only as good as our workers.”

In addition to the increase, city workers will also get Veteran’s Day as a paid holiday.
