Durham police have arrested Shatique Kamal Skinner and charged him with murder in the May 18 shooting death of Frederick Edgerton.
Skinner, 21, of Durham was arrested without incident Thursday in the 600 block of Mimosa Street.
Officers responded to a shooting call Monday at 8:41 a.m. at an apartment complex at 1835 Cheek Road. When they arrived, they found a male in the parking lot who had been shot. The male, identified as 52-year-old Frederick Edgerton of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Edgerton was a former Marine hired by the Oakley Square Apartment Complex to clean the place up.
Residents at the complex said Skinner didn’t live at the Oakley Square Apartment Complex but hung around all the time.
“Yeah, I’ve known him [Skinner] since we were kids and it’s unexpected. He’s known Mr. Fred as long as I have. How could you do something like that to someone you’ve known so long?” said resident Amnesia Brooks.
Other residents of the complex said they are relieved an arrest has been made.
“I love it that they made an arrest but the sad thing is he isn’t here anymore. And that makes me upset. He was a good person and made us feel like this was our home,” said resident Latoya Merrill. The shooting was not a random act, investigators said.
