Durham teacher suspended following expletive-filled tirade towards students

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Durham middle school teacher has been suspended after audio recordings show her going on an expletive-filled tirade in class.

Majonica Haithcox was recorded by a student Wednesday where she expressed her frustrations with the election and her student’s level of respect.

Superintendent Bert L’Homme issued a statement saying Haithcox has been suspended pending further disciplinary action.

“I will not tolerate yelling and foul language with students. My statement this week was clear: we must provide a safe, respectful and welcoming environment for ALL students. The teacher in question has been suspended pending a recommendation for disciplinary action,” L’Homme said in a statement.

Haithcox is listed as an eight grade language arts teacher at Shepard Middle School.

“Don’t talk to me! I don’t give a (expletive,)” Haithcox can be heard yelling. “The social climate is too intense for us to keep acting like a (expletive) fool. We are smart. We don’t do that (expletive).”

Haithcox hammers the students about the election and what she believes the future will hold.

“You can think it’s funny now but y’all be the ones crying 10 years from now, ‘oh, I should have listened to her,'” Haithcox said. “Get your (expletive) together.”

The teacher then said she had no problem taking her issues up with her students’ parents.

“Tell your parents. I’ll call them on the phone and cuss them out, too,” she said. “After the first week I stopped giving a damn because y’all didn’t give a damn.”

Haithcox then works to justify her tirade to the students.

“I’m cussing at you because this is honestly the only way it’s gonna hit y’all,” she said. “I gotta be real with y’all, I’m a real-ass (expletive) that’s what it is. I keep it real. I keep it honest. Y’all are (expletive) up.”

Haithcox then moves on to discuss the difficulties of being a teacher.

“I’m losing sleep. I’m waking up at 2 in the (expletive) morning to make sure y’all have work,” she said. “Maybe they’ll give you some white teachers that care about ya’ll.”

A student in Haithcox’s class said she is “nice actually, but she was upset about the election results, and her anger came out on us.”

Haithcox told CBS North Carolina she had no comment until she was done discussing the incident with her lawyers.
