BURLINGTON, N.C. (WFMY) – A passenger in an Alamance County EMS ambulance was taken to the hospital Sunday morning after the driver fell asleep at the wheel while driving, officials say

A police investigation showed that the driver of the EMS truck fell asleep, ran off the road to the right and hit the curb around 6:20 in the 2700 block of McKinney Street.

Police say the vehicle traveled 70 feet after hitting the curb and collided with a concrete retaining wall.

The passenger, an EMS coworker, was hurt but did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.

The passenger was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center.

The driver was uninjured. The section of McKinney Street was shut down for around an hour.
