Family’s story of Durham man’s death differs from medical examiner’s

News

Durham police are investigating the death of William Bishop – a man the medical examiner said was strangled to death at his own home in April.

But, that’s not the same story Bishop’s family has.

According to a report in the Tampa Bay Times, Sharon Bishop, William Bishop’s ex-wife and mother of their son, Alexander Bishop, says he died from a heart attack.

The warrant says Alexander Bishop was the only one home with him at the time. Investigators say he gave different versions about what happened.

Warrants say after Alexander Bishop called police, he called his mother, telling her he found his dad lying on the floor with the dog’s leash around his neck.

But, when police arrived, they found William Bishop slouched in a chair.

The warrant says the teenager wanted an EMS supervisor to know that he “wasn’t going to be upset about his father dying,” adding that his father verbally abused him and his mother for years.

Sharon Bishop and William Bishop’s girlfriend, Julie Seel, both agreed to talk about the complicated father-son relationship.

The next day they said they would not talk to investigators without being legally required to do so.

CBS 17 reached out to Durham police Wednesday about whether any charges will be filed.

They say this is an ongoing death investigation.
