DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Thirty-four million people are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend and about one-third of them will be flying out of airports.

In the last few years, AAA has seen a major spike in travel for this summer holiday.

The jump is mostly tied to the current economic climate both here at home and internationally.

With much of the country seemingly back on track and making its way to recovery, more families are able to set aside some money for extra luxuries like travel.

Over at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the staff is preparing for an influx of customers. Not every traveler is anticipating a smooth journey given the recent issues with the Transportation Security Administration.

In the last few weeks, travelers have complained of hours of waiting for TSA lines. In the last few days the TSA head of security stepped down as the organization looks to fix the issues.

Some travelers at RDU didn’t blame the TSA for the recent delays.

“I have to say the problem is not the TSA. I think the problem are the travelers. I’m still amazed at people say, ‘Oh, I can’t take this on board? My suitcase is too big?’ And I think in a funny way that’s more the problem,” said Betty Mauceri from New York City.

Airports are trying to reassure travelers that things can go fairly quickly if you help out by arriving at least 90 minutes before your trip and making sure that your liquids meet TSA guidelines and are in a separate compartment of your luggage so that you can easily access it and put it aside for the security check.

Judith McDaniel from Cary heeded the TSA’s advice.

“I planned. I thought I better get here a little early just in case because of all the news telling us it’s not go smoothly but it looks fine at this level but by the time you get to security you don’t know what it’s going to be.”

The TSA and airports say what will slow down your Memorial Day travels is contraband and items that are on their ban list.

Experts say of the millions traveling, 34 percent will be flying. One poll found the top 5 domestic destinations are

  1. New York City
  2. Washington D.C.
  3. Boston
  4. Orlando
  5. Los Angeles

Maybe the best tip that experts have for you is to start your travels early. That, of course, gives you a head start on the traffic and a smoother ride to vacation.
