CAMERON, N.C. (WNCN) — Authorities are investigating a serious crash involving a car and a dump truck that occurred Monday morning in Cameron in Harnett County.

The crash occurred sometime around 6:08 a.m. on N.C. Highway 24/N.C. Highway 27 near Lizzie Jeter Lane, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. That section of road was shut down for approximately five hours.

Residents who live on the road said they heard a big crash around 6 a.m. and saw that a car collided with a dump truck.

According to troopers on scene, the car traveled left of center at a high rate of speed and slammed head-on into a dump truck.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The passenger was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but their condition is not known. The driver of the dump truck was not transported to the hospital for any injuries.

The dump truck is registered to a trucking company based in Raleigh.

Multiple North Carolina State Highway Patrol cruisers, as well as firefighters, responded to the crash. Firefighters on scene told CBS 17 that Hazmat cleanup is required for the crash due to diesel and battery acid on the road.

The road was reopened just after 11 a.m.
