6-year-old boy found after reports he was taken in car, sheriff says

LUMBERTON, N.C. (WNCN) – Authorities say 6-year-old Rahmir Brown has been located after he was kidnapped when his mother’s car was stolen from their home Friday.

Sammie Leond Smith, 46 of Lumberton, is a friend of the mother and is accused of stealing the vheicle with Brown inside.

Robeson County Deputies responded to the residence along the 100 block of Southfield Road in Lumberton around 7:58 p.m. 

Laterra Francis, the boy’s mother, said she had come home from the store and had gone inside the residence to put groceries inside. She said that around 5:30 p.m., her son Rahmir was playing outside when she went inside, according to the sheriff office’s post. 

Shen she came back outside, Francis said she saw her car being driven away by her friend with her 6-year-old son inside, the post said.

The two were located during a traffic stop in Florence County, South Carolina around 3:30 a.m. Satuday, authorities say.

Smith was taken into custody and is being held in the Florence County Detention Center for violations in Florence County and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Authorities say Brown has been located with mother and did not have any type of injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.
