Chatham County joins list of school districts closed on May 1 for teacher rally

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Chatham County Schools will be closed May 1 after the school board voted unanimously Thursday night to close all schools for students.

The school district joins more than 25 other districts who have canceled classes because of the rally organized by the North Carolina Association of Educators.

While initially manageable, the number of absences that were not covered by a substitute has steadily increased over the past two days, the district said.

May 1 will now be an optional teacher workday.
