15-year-old charged after man found dead in car in Fayetteville, police say

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A teen has been arrested and charged in a deadly shooting that happened in Fayetteville Monday afternoon, police say.

The incident was reported just before 4:10 p.m. in the 800 block of Conestoga Drive, according to a news release from Fayetteville police.

“Officers arrived on the area and located a male victim inside of a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound,” the news release said.  The victim died at the scene

On Tuesday, police said the victim was Donovan Lamar Moon, 30, of the 800 block of Vagabond Drive.

 A 15-year-old has been apprehended and charged Moon’s death, police said.

“Him and the shooter did know each other however their relationship is unknown at this time,” said Fayetteville Officer Jeremy Strickland. 

Neighbors said they heard the gunfire Monday afternoon.

“Gunshots going, children running, literally, it’s crazy, there was a lot of young adults, there’s no excuse young adults to even have firearms,” said neighbor Dustin Lee. 

Lee says it’s a familiar sound around Conastoga Drive.

“You’re so used to hearing these gunshots,” said Lee.

In fact, police reported 141 calls crime in that area in the last six months — everything from burglary, vandalism, break-ins and several for shots fired. 

It’s the reason Lee put up his cameras around his house.

“You have to nowadays, have to carry a firearm at times and it’s crazy that it didn’t always have to be like that,” said Lee.

Police say they’re also keeping watch to try and find what’s leading up to the crime and that deadly shooting.

“When you have these areas that are prone to violent crime, patrols are increased however we always reach out to the community and ask if they hear gunshots to call us,” said Strickland. 

The teen is currently being held at a juvenile detention facility.
