Days before opening to fans, Fayetteville’s new ballpark still isn’t finished

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Construction crews are now scrambling to finish Fayetteville’s new baseball stadium.

The ballpark is scheduled to open to fans Saturday and crews say there’s still more work to do.

“We’re trying to pour the concrete on the front of the building on the entrance so, it’s gonna be a long day today,” said construction worker David Sullivan.

He says they’ve been working around the clock trying to get things done because of rain delays – and making that deadline will be tight.

“We’re breaking our back to see. We’re hoping,” said Sullivan.

The contracted construction company in charge of the project, Barton Malow, didn’t want to go on camera.

But city leaders say they still need an occupancy permit from the city to make sure it’s safe for fans to be inside.

“If you’re gonna have people come in and drink water from a fountain, or buy food, you gotta go through all those checks, you gotta through all the electrical outlets so people can’t get shocked, so they’re in the process of those things now,” said City Council Member and Baseball Committee Chair Jim Arp.

City leaders say the contractor is expected to have the proper permit by Friday and be ready Saturday for the fans, and next Thursday for the first ball game.

If it’s not done by April 18, the contractor could be fined, but crews are trying to make sure they don’t miss those deadlines.

“It’s just a push and a shove, everybody’s walking on everybody’s toes right now trying to get the date, hit the deadline,” said Sullivan.
