FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Drivers should get ready for some big delays and detours in the Fayetteville area.
Repair and maintenance on at least eight different railroad crossings will be happening around the same time next week.
It’s all expected to start Sunday and throughout next week.
The work and related road closures are things drivers and people nearby say is going to make a big impact.
“It’s just a little bit of aggravation for them to do them all at one time if they would maybe do them incrementally, so it wouldn’t completely block because that will be increasing the time,” said Diana Cain who lives near two of the crossings slated for construction.
“Once they close this down, I don’t know how the bus system is gonna work,” said neighbor Godfrey Carter,”They’re gonna have to reroute all this stuff, and I don’t know where they’re gonna turn around at, these are little housing areas and it’s gonna be hard for them to go in there and turn around.”
CSX, the railroad company doing the work, did not return calls and emails requesting comment.
However, Friday evening they released a statement, which said in part:
“CSX has been coordinating closely with local officials to develop detour routes and work schedules that will enable crews to replace crossties and resurface crossings in multiple locations, including Gillespie, Dick and Russell Street. While this work necessitates the temporary closure of some at-grade rail crossings, CSX is repaving the asphalt at these locations to provide a safe, smooth surface for drivers. CSX appreciates the public’s patience while we complete this important work, which is critical to ensuring the safety of motorists using these crossings and a safe, reliable freight rail networks.”
NC DOT officials say they’ve been working with the company. They say it’s common for the company to contract out the work and do the repairs in clusters to make it easier for them and their schedules.
The work is expected to last three to five days depending on the weather.
