SPRING LAKE, N.C. (WNCN) — A woman was rescued while clinging to a tree in a Cumberland County river after a kayaking accident Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The incident was reported around 5:30 p.m. Saturday as a missing kayaker along the Little River near Spring Lake, according to the Spring Lake Fire Department.

A man and woman were kayaking and each of their watercraft capsized.

“The male kayaker reported that he’d made it to shore and that (he) hadn’t seen the female,” Spring Lake fire officials said in a news release.

The man called 911 after the woman was missing for about five minutes, fire officials said.

Spring Lake fire crews deployed a drone above the river and boat in Little River during the search.

Crews on foot along the banks of Little River found the woman “hanging onto a tree in the river,” officials said.

The boat was then sent to rescue her.  The woman was treated at the scene and then taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Fort Bragg Fire/Emergency Services and Cape Fear Valley EMS assisted in the rescue.
