RAEFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A man is dead after a deputy-involved shooting in Hoke County on Friday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Friday, deputies were conducting a high-risk search warrant in the 100 block of Hickory Drive in Raeford. After arriving, deputies knocked and announced their presence.

As deputies entered the residence while announcing their arrival, they encountered an armed person who complied with demands to drop the weapon. Deputies said they encountered another armed person who did not comply with commands to drop his weapon and shots were fired.

Sheriff Roderick Virgil immediately placed the involved deputies on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure. The sheriff’s office contacted the SBI to conduct a review of the facts and circumstances leading to the shooting.

“Our immediate concerns are to support and respect the family and friends of the deceased, cooperate fully with the SBI, and provide our deputies with the services necessary to cope with this traumatic incident,” said Sheriff Virgil.

The sheriff’s office said they will release the decedent’s name once family members are notified.

The investigation remains ongoing and a CBS 17 crew is at the scene to report any new information as it becomes available.
