DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — One person is dead and another is injured after a shooting took place in Durham Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to a shooting at 1:59 p.m. at Cornwallis Road Apartments in the 2500 block of South Roxboro Street.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male victim shot, who was identified on Thursday as Derek Ortiz, 21, of Cary. EMS responded and pronounced the male dead at the scene.

Officers also said a female victim was also shot and then transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police had a large area of the parking lot blocked off at the apartment complex and more than 20 evidence markers could be seen at the scene.

Officers have not released any suspect information yet, however, police said this shooting does not appear to be random.

Meanwhile, people who live at Cornwallis Road Apartments are shaken up by what happened.

A woman, who did not want to be identified, was outside her apartment with her friend when the gunfire rang out. She said her friend was grazed in the ear by a bullet.

“Straight from the alley way, the bullet came right here, hit the wall, and then hit my girlfriend right there in the ear,” the woman said.

The woman also said a lot of the violence in her community is not caused by the people who live at this complex, but is caused by visitors who drive through the complex.

Additionally, Tara Parrish was inside her apartment at Cornwallis Road when the shooting happened.

“We heard this barrage of gunfire,” Parrish said.

Parrish said she heard at least 30 gunshots and said everyone in her family dropped down when they heard the gunfire.

She said the man killed was shot right behind her home.

“It’s overwhelming and it’s sad,” Parrish said. “It’s sad the children have to witness or see this, see just a young boy laying on the ground. He hasn’t started his life, and his life is just gone.”

Parrish said two bullets from this shooting flew into her upstairs bedroom. She said her 14-year-old was in the room at the time.

“I’m thankful he did not get hit, but it’s just too close to home,” Parrish said.

A woman shared this photo with CBS 17, showing a bullet that had shattered a window in her home during a shooting on Wednesday in Durham (Tara Parrish).

This is the second shooting reported on S. Roxboro Street on Wednesday, as police responded to another just before 8:30 a.m. An adult male was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said a male individual was transported away from the scene. He is in police custody charged with resist, delay or obstruct.

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Kellar at 919-560-4440 ext. 29306 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
